struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I took the class at Thanksgiving. My Instructor is annoyed with me because I have not applied. Im thinking about going tomorrow...I dont know why I have not applied. It just makes me uneasy. I suppose it brings out my LEO paranoia..??? At first i didn't apply because I still was not comfortable with guns but I am now.. Anyone hesitant to get a permit that might make them stand out with TPTB?

no, beats the alternative if you are ever caught with one in the vehicle for an incidental speeding violation.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I also hesitated for years.... didn't want to be on those "lists".
(we don't have firearm registrations so the only place my name had ever come up is in a NICS check)

Eventually I decided there was very little point even owning a handgun if I could only legally carry it in my house. :ok:

here in NC they have a list for everything..Im sure ill be on some type of list..

I suppose my concern is traffic stops. I dont deal well with them. I dont need one more reason for a Cop to be an asshat when he pulls me..

How have traffic stops gone for those who have a permit??

I doubt that a permit holder would have more trouble from the cops, but I'd be interested to hear any stories. Maybe if you're not white...

I hate the idea of getting fingerprinted - necessary for a permit in my state - but then I remembered that I already was fingerprinted 15 years ago, so I have nothing to lose in that regard.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Avalon, don't really know about NC, but in FL the LEO knows even before he gets out of his car that you have a permit. He will approach you from the blind side with his hand on his weapon. He will never stand directly aside you.

Hand him your DL and CCP at the same time will diffuse it some. No doubt he will then ask if you have a weapon on you. From there it can go anyway he wants it to.

Side note. In some county's here if they have to serve a warrant they will use the SWAT team if you have a CCP.

EDIT/UPDATE: I wasn't being negative, just straight talk. I personally have had a permit here in FL since they first came out.

Second I don't see much sense in doing stupid things while driving just to arrive a few minutes sooner.

If you filled out form 4473 for your firearms, then you are already on a list - go get your carry permit.

LE: "Good afternoon... do you know wh.."
You: "'afternoon! I have a concealed carry permit and a firearm at my ankle"
LE: "Thanks, good to know, keep your hands away from your ankle. Anyways, why I stopped you.."

I've heard some horror stories from the early days of states CCW laws
but I think police see it a lot more these days in shall-issue states.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I have had a CCW for about 15 years now. No problems. I have been pulled over one time for a traffic violation. I handed the officer my CCW permit with my DL. We had a nice conversation on both of our preferences for carry. He still gave me a ticket though.:censored:

I would advise just handing over your CCW permit with your DL rather than mentioning anything verbally. You might slip up and accidentally say you have a gun and then things will pretty much go downhill from there.

Also, your CCW will probably come up on their computer when they run your DL/plates so don't even think for one second that they will not know. They would much rather that you inform them than for them to have to ask. Bx3

Go and get it done....if your experience is like mine, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the local LEO's were pretty supportive of responsible citizens owning guns....if you think about it, it makes their job easier to have a good number of responsibly armed citizens...granted, I did not like being fingerprinted, but that's a small price to pay for being able to carry a piece and defend yourself....besides which, with your C&C, you can walk into any store and purchase a pistol and walk out with it that day.....

I'm sure they do. It makes for a lot less paperwork on their end when you're the one pulling the trigger.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I decided not to get one. In my state, it is legal to carry open all the time (with the usual restrictions) and concealed on your own home, property or fixed place of business. It is also allowed to carry a loaded weapon in you vehicle if it is not in the passenger cabin. Glovebox is OK and so is the center console if it has a lockable door.

Wouldn't recommend keeping the pistol in the glovebox with your registration though.

Have you spoken to anybody with a CC at your local range that had a run before??

That would be the best indicator of weather you want to deal or not.

the class certificate is not suppose to expire, at least here in NC. Of course all is dependent upon the Sheriffs discretion so its possible they could make an issue over an older class certificate if they wanted to.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Avalon, I highly recommend you get the permit, and not worry. I had the same mindset - but here in Texas I have been pleasantly surprised about the mindset among cops concerning those who have concealed carry permits. I have spoken to several cops about it, and instructors, and they have all said that they view people having permits a real positive. When you get pulled over and hand your carry permit along with your license, the cop knows that you are not a felon and have passed a background check. My wife, who has one, has said that she noticed a difference after having her permit with stops. She can have a bit of a lead foot, and has said that the cops like that she is carrying and that she has only received warnings instead of tickets since getting her permit to carry. I have only been stopped once since getting my permit and the cop was very polite and issued only a warning as well.

Of course, this is here in Texas, in the area we live in. I guess it can change by state and even county within a state. I would talk it over with your instructor, as well as other permit holders. I would be surprised if they did not have mostly positive experiences.

As for lists... Don't worry, we are all already on any lists that might be out there. All I can say is, if and when these lists are ever used, I am sure I would be removed from them in short order. Not sure if I would really want to be around anymore in a country where I had to worry about these lists, anyway....

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Get your permit for your own peace of mind and your own safety. Ive been known to have a bit of a lead foot and both times that Ive been pulled over by cops since Ive had my permit, the cops appreciated the extra courtesy and peace of mind I gave them when I let them know I was carrying. I hand the cops my permit and my license, keep both hands on the steering wheel and let them know that my gun was in a holster in the small of my back. One cop let me off with a warning, the other downgraded my speed on the ticket. Both of them thanked me for letting them know that I had a permit and that I was carrying. I carry 24/7 and dont leave the house without my permit and my gun.

In Missouri, After I took the class I had to go to the County Police Headquarters/Sherifs office and fill out the request/Backgroundcheck/Fingerprint deal; I was told that it cam take up to 90 days to come back; about a week later I got an approval letter in the mail stating that I had 7 Days to come pick it up, then 7 days to get to the DMV to get it put on a DL or Non-DL Photo ID...

I would ask your instructor or LE Agency how it work for you there...

Thats just here in Mo...

I would assume its simmilar in other states...

I'd assume, you either put it on your DL or get a 2nd sepperate "None Driver ID"...

Not sure what other options they could have....

I got mine on the Non-Drivers ID, that way I don't have to worry about one expiring before the other, having to renew both or worry about getting a ticket and losing the CCW till a court date...

Also, thats what the CCW instructor recomended...

I'd check with your local DMV or a LEO and see what they say...

I've been pulled over twice and I just hand them my permit with my license and registration. The first time I was asked if I was currently armed, to which I replied yes and then he just asked where the weapon was. That was it. The second time, the officer didn't even mention anything about it.

As for "The List", if there happens to be any nice ATF agents, etc. reading this, could you please be sure to move my name to the top :wavey:. Thanks!

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

NC has a separate permit from the DL. I've had mine for quite a few years now and have not had issues with police at license checks. The one time I was pulled over for speeding I was given and warning and told to have a nice day.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Most cops appreciate it when you show your CC permit. At least out here in the west. :ok:

They know that as a CCW holder:

*You have no felony convictions--lifetime

*No class A or B misdemeanors within the last five years

*Passed both state and federal fingerprint and background checks

*No delinquent conduct within the past 10 years

*Not delinquent in child support, student loans or state/local taxes

Tends to put cops at ease. I have been let off with a warning from state, county, local police when I presented my card. One was even a DUI checkpoint. Flashed my card and was promptly waved through. A few have expressed a pro-2nd sentiment. One state cop even asked what I was carrying, as he was all excited about his new Colt Gold Cup 1911. Thought he was gonna pull it out it and show it off!

Just get it, capability is better than no capability whether used or not. Get the license and occasionally dip your toe in the water. When I first got mine, I felt incredibly conspicuous but now it's like wearing a pair of socks, not noticeable. I almost envy you your purse as a perfect and unobtrusive carry point. In the summer, I'm in shorts and a tee shirt a lot, hard to hide a pistol in that.

If you get the license, you're not forced to carry.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Speaking for myself, and only for myself, I've never seen the point in having to pay the state (in my case, Ohio, $150 IIRC) for what I should have the right to do naturally. I don't have to pay money to exercise my 1st Amendment rights, do I? Why should I do so for my 2nd Amendment rights?

The government giveth, but the government can also take away. Why make it easy for them?

Maybe I'll change my mind someday, or perhaps American society will degrade to the point that everyone will be packing despite what laws are on the books. I don't look down on those who get their CCL, but its not something I am willing to do.

SAUM 02-25-2010 11:06 PM

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I've never heard a story of a permit holder killing a cop. My sentiment is the same as most here. The cops know more about you when they pull you over than you know about yourself and you are considered to be safe for the most part because you passed all of the background checks.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

Being in Illinois, I feel discriminated against. We have no CCW. And then to add insult to injury, you have to have a bogus FOID card to purchase guns or ammo. I wanting to be the "gray" man, have not renewed my FOID since 1979. I have had the same 4 guns for 35 years. I have been getting a little desirous for something different, and broke down and reapplied for the stupid card.

that brings up a whole other topic about the logistics of carrying. My purses are generally the size of a small suitcase. If I had to find something in my purse quickly I would be dead. I have also lost my purse several times in the last few years. If I was going to carry it would be on my person.

Re: struggling with the decision to get my C&C permit..

I wish you nuts would stop worrying about a "list"! If you are born in this country, you are on the "list", it's called a social security card. Your assigned a number right away. Get over it, they aren't coming for your gold, silver or guns! There is bigger issues that the government is worried about than your gold eagle or Glock 19!

On another note, get your permit before you have to have a reason to get it. Unfortunately, most that apply for permits around here do it AFTER they have become a victim. Be proactive and get it. The last guy I know that was robbed at gun point was a friend that was robbed outside of his gun shop. Yeah, he is a FFL dealer that didn't carry, thought he would never really need it in this nice little town here, until he was robbed by an 18 year old punk as he walked next door to buy a drink from the store. He packs now though!

Don't worry about getting stopped by the police, it's merely a few extra sentences and in reality it benefits you, because like others have said, the cop already knows you are one of the "good guys". Unless you act like an asshat, you shouldn't get treated any differently.

If you don't get the permit, you can still carry a gun in your glovebox or trunk(speaking KY law here, not sure other states though), loaded and ready to use without any permit. It's legal and the cop doesn't have a right to take this gun from you(siezure) or run it's serial number(search) without probable cause on just a basic traffic stop(Although he could remove you from the car to remove the "threat" if he feels that you may be one. A lot of cops do this unlawfully just because they think they can, but they are doing an illegal search and siezure violating your 4th amendment rights(trust me on this one, I see it all the time). Sorry, I get off on a rant on this subject because I hate to see cops disarm civilians that are legally carrying for no apparent reason.

Just some things to think about.

I have had a permit for 19 years. In this state they know when they pull me over and its never come up in conversation. If I had it in my pocket I'd have to tell the officer. I have been pulled 2 times for speeding since I got the permit and got a warning both times.

I've had a Virginia CCW for 7 years now and always inform LEO of it if I'm stopped. Although they already know I have it when the approach my car, I've found they're appreciative of my cooperation and I've received a few warnings in lieu of tickets. I'm not afraid of being on any damn government list...F 'em.

here's the thing.. What i do affects my spouse. A lot my hesitation at getting the permit is because my husband feels he will have troubles if he gets stopped because I am on record with a C@C license.

We have different vehicles registered under our own individual names and very rarely drive each other vehicles... How will that work?

BTW, a woman who is interested in guns and slowly trainaing and accumulating an arsenal may be the GIM mans dream girl..My husband considers it a nightmare.

Your husband should educate himself before forming an opinion. As many here have said, having a CCW will get you warnings rather than tickets. I've experienced this phenomena first-hand, several times. Ask him what "trouble" he expects to encounter.

He should be damn thankful he has you there to protect him if he ever needs it. If someone breaks into your house, I guess he gets to sit by the phone while YOU go check things out eh?

I dont blow off my husbands concerns because he is right. What legally affects me also affects him and visa versa..

Quite honestly my husband doesn't really believe in guns. He is old school and fights with his fist..He is quick tempered and will fight at the drop of the hat.. Its one reason he does not carry a gun. He is also foolhardy, he recently had an encounter with a guy carrying and it didn't phase him so I have no concerns how he would react if an armed intruder came in. I also have no doubts he would get shot acting in that manner..

I'd say close to the the least desirable trait for someone who would carry a weapon is "quick tempered and will fight at the drop of the hat".

So your husband doesn't believe in guns? How about an older woman alone in with someone breaking in. Would he not believe in guns for her too?

I have had my permit for 2 years less than I have had my drivers license...both over 30 years. Don't know how a traffic stop would go...never has happened.

If you have purchased a gun the ATF already has a record of you being a gun owner. A permit doesn't change anything. Get your permit and be one of the folks who have decided that protecting themselves and loved ones is more important than being PC.

I have and enjoy mine..

If you want it get it... If you don't, don't...

Been pulled over a few times now, It is a NON-issue....

For those that don't want to be on a ""List"...

What ""List" would this be that you are not on already if you purchased a firearm legally???

Seriously, what is it???

Please don't fly off the handle and make up some stupid smart assed response, just to be a smart ass...

Maybe you do know of something I and some of the other do not know of..

We are all here to share the facts....

So your husband doesn't believe in guns? How about an older woman alone in with someone breaking in. Would he not believe in guns for her too?

My husband would believe in a older woman other then his wife carrying a gun for protection.. :9536: He is slowly coming around. I think he has finally figured out Im not going to shoot him by accident or plug him if I get mad. Its been an adjustment for him since he has always had the role of family protector... It steps on his toes... We are working it through... In the meantime I am thinking my next addition to the arsenal will be a good old fashioned 22 rifle. :)

BTW, if a person knows they dont have the temperament to carry isnt it best they are just honest with themselves? My husband and I are older and know our limitations. He knows his quick temper and willingness to fight are not compatible with carrying a gun. I know even after I get my C&C I will never carry in my car and only in my trunk. Why? Because I hate tailgaters with a passion. I have almost been killed twice by being rear ended at very high speeds by idiot tailgaters. I see a car tailgating and I take it as personal as human getting in my direct space threatening me.. I would be tempted to shoot out their tires, best the gun stays in the trunk don't you think..?

In free states you can buy and sell firearms through private sale without having to go through any kind of paper work or registering of any kind, and the govt will not have record of that.
